A Study of the Hand, 2012

A study of The Hand (a documentation of a drawing process)

Rita Nettelstads recent work investigates the nature of the document – specifically, the documentation of performance. How can a process be documented? What value might this documentation have? At what point can a document become a drawing? These are some of the questions taken up in Rita’s project, a series of small- scale pencil drawings titled A study of the hand (a documentation of a drawing process). In presenting subtle variations in mark-making, movement and pressure, Rita establishes a minor archive, shifting scales in an attempt to find a place for the everyday, the insignificant and the obscure.
